Medical Assistance for Hospitalized Incarcerated People

2.5.5.4.1 Health Care Delivery (Archive)

Incarcerated people who are hospitalized and enrolled in Medical Assistance (MA) must follow guidelines for receiving medically necessary services. These MA enrollees are excluded from managed care enrollment. Medical services are provided via fee for service.

Fee for Service

Fee-for-service is a method of payment where the medical provider bills the Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP) for specific, individual services. Enrollees must use a medical provider enrolled with MHCP, except in special circumstances. A directory of enrolled providers is available online.

Covered Services

MA only covers services received while the incarcerated person is an inpatient in a hospital or in a long-term care facility.
