What is the Social Security Claim Number?

The Social Security claim number identifies whose account the client is drawing from and why they are receiving those benefits. Review the social security claim number if you are unsure of the type of payment a client receives.

l  The first part of the claim number is the Social Security number (SSN) of the wage earner on whose account claims are being paid.

Note:  If the person receiving benefits is a dependent of the wage earner, the claim number SSN will not be the same as the SSN of the person receiving benefits.

Example:

Mildred receives survivor's benefits on the account of her deceased husband, Baxter. Mildred's SSN is 444-34-5555. The first part of the claim number is 444-33-2222.

Action:

The claim number is not based on Mildred's SSN. It is most likely Baxter's SSN.

l  The second part of the claim number is the suffix following the SSN.

n  It is usually a letter which may or may not be followed by a digit.

n  The suffix indicates the type of benefits the claimant receives.

n  The suffix for SSI is different than the suffix for RSDI if a client is receiving both.
