The allowances listed in this section are used in determining a community spouse’s allocation allowance for the LTC spouse income calculation. See LTC Community Spouse Allocation for steps in determining how to calculation the allocation amount, and when to use the allocation allowances.
Minimum Monthly Income Allowance.
Maximum Monthly Income Allowance.
The utility allowance is used to determine a community spouse’s shelter expenses. The figure to use depends on whether the community spouse is responsible for either:
l Heating and/or cooling costs.
Note: Reduce the allowance amount by the amount of any utility expenses included in a required cooperative or condominium maintenance charge.
l Electricity or phone service.

The basic shelter allowance is used to determine the community spouse’s net shelter expenses. It is deducted from the community spouse's total shelter expenses.
Note: This allowance is updated yearly on July 1.

Minimum Monthly Income Allowance
The minimum monthly income allowance is added to the excess shelter allowance to determine the monthly income allowance. This amount is compared to the maximum monthly income allowance.

The maximum monthly income allowance is used to determine the amount the community spouse needs to maintain their home while the client is in the facility.
