Social Security Administration (SSA) issues two cash benefit programs:
l Retirement Survivors Disability Insurance (RSDI) payments.
l Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) payments.
These programs are not interchangeable. Each program is administered by the federal government but has its own unique rules and regulations.
Medicare eligibility is also determined by SSA, as well as the Railroad Retirement Board, depending on what type of benefits a person is receiving. Medicare is a federal health insurance program.
